Anxiety
When your mind is always preparing for what might go wrong, it can be difficult to enjoy what is happening right now.
Everyone experiences anxiety occasionally. But when worry becomes difficult to control, even everyday situations can begin to feel exhausting. You may find yourself constantly thinking about what could happen, replaying conversations, questioning decisions, expecting the worst, having difficulty sleeping, feeling tense or restless, or needing reassurance that everything is okay. Sometimes anxiety has an obvious cause. Other times, you may think: “Everything is fine. Why do I still feel anxious?”
Your Anxiety May Have a Story
Rather than simply asking how to make anxiety disappear, counseling can help us understand why your mind has learned to respond this way. Our experiences shape what we expect from the world. If you have experienced criticism, rejection, uncertainty, conflict, frightening situations, difficult relationships, loss, or times when you felt powerless, your mind may have learned to stay prepared. Over time, thoughts such as these can become automatic: “Something bad is going to happen.” “I'm going to mess this up.” “People are judging me.” “I'm not good enough.” “I have to keep everything under control.”
These thoughts can feel completely true even when another part of you recognizes that they may not fit the situation.
Sometimes anxiety is connected to experiences that taught us to anticipate danger, rejection, criticism, or failure. Even when circumstances change, those earlier experiences may continue influencing how we think, feel, and respond. When appropriate, EMDR therapy can help address distressing memories and negative beliefs that contribute to present anxiety. Rather than focusing only on managing symptoms, EMDR may reduce the emotional impact of experiences that continue shaping anxious reactions, helping you respond to present situations with greater flexibility and confidence.
Learning to Respond Differently
Counseling can help you recognize what triggers your anxiety and understand the connection between your thoughts, emotions, physical reactions, and past experiences. We can also work on practical ways to calm your body, manage overwhelming thoughts, tolerate uncertainty, and respond differently when anxiety appears. Sometimes that also means working through earlier experiences that still influence how you respond today. The goal isn't to eliminate every anxious feeling. Some anxiety is a normal part of being human.
The goal is for anxiety to become something you can understand and manage rather than something that controls your choices.
